Kathie is passionate about art, and is currently working full time as an artist. Working in a variety of mediums, Kathie loves the effect of translucent glazes that can be achieved in a painting using oils, tempera or water colours. The translucent richness of colour that can be built up using egg tempera has inspired Kathie to paint icons in the 17th Century style, using traditional methods, including the technique of water gilding.Kathie's introduction to gilding was approximately 10 years ago, while decorating and restoring pieces of furniture. Fascinated by the effects of gilding, she has produced a series of paintings with gilded vessels. Visiting art galleries and museums throughout Europe, and a trip to Italy to attend a painting workshop with Dick Frizzell, has influenced Kathie’s more recent works by studying the ‘Old Masters’ techniques of painting and glazing, particularly the Old Dutch masters for their use of dark colours and light reflection, and also by Italian painters for their use of strong rich colour. Learning ‘old techniques’ Kathie has also completed a series of lacquer work, similar to those produced in the Fedoskino region in Russia which incorporate Mother of Pearl and 24k gold leaf. Her continued research into ‘old’ art methods has seen the integration of ‘old’ mediums and techniques with ‘new’ has resulted in a series of contemporary/abstract paintings, using several mediums in one painting, achieving a harmony between the old and the new. She has recently completed a series of contemporary iconic works incorporating various mediums for her latest exhibition – ICONS TODAY. Kathie’s artwork is held in Auckland's City Council collection, as well as in private collections in New Zealand, London and New York.
